Come on Britain, have some common sense!
This is something I, personally, have always struggled with in my life! However, instead of being beaten by a word, I would always look up it's meaning in the dictionary. If I didn't know how to do something, I would ask for help or, more often than not, figure it out for myself! I love learning new things, have done since I was little.
Now though, I'm not surprised that so many people cannot read or write! In school, we are all taught to read, write and use numbers. When we are young (under 10), spelling and grammar is main things, language wise, that we are taught. But so many words in the English language are too hard for even educated adults to spell! Most of my University days, I relied on spell check on the computer! I had so much information to try and keep in my head that the simplest words would be written wrong.
When people say what they want from their life, they either say; to be happy. Or they say; to have a big house, fancy car, the works. In the English language though, there is one word to cover BOTH of these types of lifestyle, content!
From Oxford Dictionary
Content (1) - a state of peaceful happiness
Content (2) - the things that are held or included in something
Surely, the type of contentment that will help us all be truly happy is the 1st definition above?? Yet, especially in Britain, we are so materialistic, it's not even funny any more!
Especially when there is such a massive variation on the income families have coming in.
Some people born in to high income families, take money for granted a lot of the time. Most people born in to a low income family, secretly hate people who live an expensive lifestyle.
If the world was less materialistic, and money-orientated, there would not be as many wars or deprived people in the world!!
Old 'sayings' should be applied to modern day politics and we might have a system that the majority of Britain understand!
The government could be explained in some of these 'sayings';
'Brute force and Ignorance'; ignorant to people's needs in life and enforcing THEIR way on the population by force, the police, armed forces etc.
'Money is the root to all evil'; they try to recover from a recession by increasing VAT to 20%?! This means only the rich British can afford the little luxuries in life, whereas the poorer members of society can barely afford to buy essentials for their families.
'Charity starts at home'; they are always donating money to other countries, even though we are at crisis point! I understand that we have to help out other countries in extreme need but we need to help out the starving and abused children in this country; the old people who are cast aside by society because they are seen as useless; the teenagers who are bored and turning to drugs, alcohol, violence and worse; the unemployed adults with no qualifications because they were failed by the school system.
'Actions speak louder than words'; how can anyone trust the government? They tell us all that not working and living on benefits is wrong; but it is not wrong to embezzle hundreds or thousands of the tax payer's money to build a duck house! Where is the sense in that? By the new government telling people on benefits what they are doing is wrong, it does not encourage unemployed people to go and get a job because they see the people in charge of the country, on decent wages, do the exact same thing!! The expenses scandal involved politicians from every party that were involved so, no matter who got in to number 10, nobody would have any faith in anything they say!
In Britain, we have our priorities completely wrong! Instead of aiming for a job that would make you happy, we all chase the dream job with salary to match! If politicians really wanted to change the country, they should ALL be paid minimum wage! The rest of the money used to pay their horrendous salaries should go to helping low income families to make a better life for their FAMILY!! If minimum wage is supposed to be enough money for families to live on, then it should be enough to keep the PM and his family going too! Then the only people that were high up in politics, would be the ones that genuinely wanted the country, as a whole, to be happier and more content with their lives.
There are so many other old sayings that can be applied to the government! It's not difficult! It's just common sense!!
The more power the government gets, the more rules and regulations that they will enforce, the more working class Britain will rebel and we may end up with scenes like we have seen in Egypt! Probably not on the same scale but the poorer who keep getting poorer are more likely to have less respect for authority due to their own life experiences while growing up and therefore, more likely to protest with violence, rather than peacefully!
